The college football season has just begun with fall practice, who do you think will win it all this year? While you might not have a chance to actively participate in NCAA games, TBF has a way for ANYONE (students, alumni, or fans) to help shore up the reputation and competitiveness of your favorite college/university. All you have to do is sign up today for TBF’s and Collegiate Billfish National Championship (CBNC) competition. Your team may not be in contention right now for the #1 ranking, but with TBF, you and your friends can win a National

The winners of TBF’s Annual Tag & Release Awards Competition were honored in a fun-filled ceremony at Jungle Island on Saturday, February 19, 2010. These Captains, Mates and Anglers (including Youth & Ladies) tagged or released the most of each billfish species in each of the world’s three major oceans during the 2009-2010 competition year. In addition to celebrating the award winners, this event also kicked off TBF’s Silver Anniversary! The crowd had an amazing time at this year’s event, first enjoying cocktails and hors d’ouevres on a terrace overlooking the Miami skyline. The party then moved inside

TBF’S ECOLOGY WORKSHOP: EDUCATION IN ACTION
On December 7th, 2009, The Billfish Foundation visited the Sea, Sand and Stars Science and Nature Center at Orange Beach Elementary School in Orange Beach, Alabama. TBF’s Science and Policy Specialist, Elliott Stark, lead a group of 54 sixth graders in TBF’s first ever Ecology Workshop. Under Stark’s guidance, the students learned about marine physiology, ocean processes and the importance of conservation. The Ecology Workshop, part of TBF’s Youth Education Program, included an interactive presentation about the oceans and the local marine environment, complete with a get-your-hands-dirty demonstration about the function of fish anatomy looking at Spanish mackerel
TAG & RELEASE COMPETITION UPDATE
TBF receives close to 15,000 tag and release data cards each year and works hard to process them in time to tabulate for our annual Tag and Release Award Ceremony in February. While TBF cannot calculate the winners yet, we again are highlighting the “Top Five” in many of the competition categories. This list constitutes the tag and release records processed by TBF as of September 10, 2010. TBF hopes these Top Five lists re-energize the billfishing community to tag and release more fish before the end of the competition on October 31, 2010. Please remember to fill out

Watching collegiate atheltics is exciting and can leave you on the edge of your seat rooting for your alma mater or rooting against your rivals. One big problem is you cannot participate and help your college. Well, that has all changed. Unlike NCAA tournaments,YOU, the anglers, captains and fans, have the opportunity to help the college of your choice win TBF’s Collegiate National Billfish Championship (CBNC). Remember ANYONE(student, alumni or fan) can particpate in this competition, you don’t even have to fish to win prizes. Your tagging records will count for the CBNC AND TBF’s Annual Tag &
I RECAPTURED A TBF TAGGED BILLFISH: WHAT NOW?
Have you recaptured a TBF tagged billfish? Congratulations, it is a rare feat for anglers to catch a tagged fish, so thank for reporting it! By reporting your recapture, you are helping provide TBF and its partners with valuable data about billfish and, therefore, helping out the entire sportfishing community. Please fill out this recapture form with as much information as you can and then please contact us. When a fish is recaptured, the scientific loop of data collection is completed, giving scientists insight into billfish biology and movement patterns. TBF utilizes the data provided to help steer fisheries
