Youth Education

TBF knows that the future of billfish and healthy oceans depends on tomorrow's leaders. By placing an emphasis on youth education, TBF is nurturing a new generation of ocean stewards.

Publications: Sailfish & Spearfish

TBF’s Youth Education Program is of central importance to ocean conservation—both in the present and for the future. At the heart of this program are two publications geared towards children and young adults.  Spearfish teaches elementary marine science while tapping the creative energy of tomorrow's conservationists, ages 12 and under, who contribute photos, drawings, stories and poetry to the publication while learning about billfish. Sailfish provides young adults, ages 13 to 17, with a more in-depth look at the sciences pertaining to billfish as well as the methods used to study and preserve their population and habitat.  Both publications are distributed to schools, in addition to being handed out at tournaments, fundraising events and club meetings.

Ocean Explorers' Expeditions

TBF brings the marine environment to students first hand with TBF's Ocean Explorers’ Expeditions.  Since 2008, Ocean Explorers’ Expeditions have brought ocean conservation lessons to more than 1,600 students from Long Island, New York to Washington D.C. and every state along the US Gulf Coast.  Including participants from pre-school through high school, the presentations range from single classrooms to entire schools and generally include presentations about the local marine environment, hands-on experiments (including constructing a sailfish and creating open ocean food chains) and tips on how the students and their families can work with TBF to conserve the marine environment.  At the completion of the course, students are given youth magazines and TBF Ocean Explorers wristbands to commemorate the experience and remind them of their role as ocean stewards.
